![]() Clark, a senator, businessman, and Las Vegas founder who made most of his money in mining and left the bulk of it to his daughter. But it was after visiting Bishop’s Castle that I remembered I had Empty Mansions by Bill Dedman in my queue and was spurred to pick it up.Įmpty Mansions, while somewhat about castles, tells the story of Huguette Clark, heir to an unfathomable amount of money. While Hearst’s is a sprawling estate at the top of a hill overlooking the Pacific Ocean, Bishop’s was (and is still) built by one man who is a bit of a local legend (you can learn more about him here). Last year I visited Hearst Castle while I was in Big Sur, CA ( courtesy of Buick), and not long ago I visited Bishop’s Castle here in Colorado. I forget this and don’t make it a point to visit them, but every time I do I’m awed. In this way, The Cutting Season is a double-edged murder mystery boasting not only Locke’s strikingly original voice, but also a timely and politically committed story that will leave a lasting impact on both the reader and the mystery field.Ī labyrinth of intersecting histories and politics, The Cutting Season dexterously reveals its narrative threads in the best fashion of the genre: the ease of the storytelling belies the complexity and nuances of the story. ![]() ![]() In Locke’s own words, it is a symbol for Belle Vie, the historic Louisiana plantation-turned-tourist destination where the story is set, and how “its beauty was not to be trusted.” It can also be seen as a metaphor for the whole novel, how beneath the surface of its whodunit plot is a daring act of social critique. ATTICA LOCKE’s The Cutting Season begins with a cottonmouth snake interrupting a wedding, dropping from a tree into the lap of the bride’s mother-in-law. ![]() ![]() ![]() Michael was born in either 1965 or 1968, possibly in the Midwest, which would explain why he spent some of his criminal careers in North Yankton or on the East Coast. Rogers left Kenton and pulled together a small group that included Art Pepper, Shelley Manne, Jimmy Giuffre, and Hampton Hawes to record Modern Sounds for Capitol. Stan Kenton then hired him away from Herman and Rogers' compositions and arrangements for Kenton made him as much of a star as any of Kenton's soloists. ![]() Rogers played with a number of big bands in the late 1940s, and began to attract attention as an arranger while working with Woody Herman.
